Year 11 Geography
Year 11 geography is a full year course that allows students to work toward gaining level one credits for the National Certificate of Educational Achievement, NCEA.
The work done throughout the year is assessed in two ways:
· Internal assessment – assignments and activities carried out throughout the year
· External assessment – an exam sat at the end of the year.
Topics covered include: Extreme natural events – earthquakes, floods, droughts or tropical cyclones, Resources and Their Use – dairying and gold mining, Population Studies – New Zealand and Monsoon Asia, Geographic Issues, Global Studies and Geographic Research.
The programme is assessed against seven achievement standards, each with its own credit rating. You can gain different grades for each achievement standard: credit merit or excellence and these contribute credits to your NCEA.
Year 12 Geography
Year 12 geography is a full year course that allows students to work toward gaining level two credits for the National Certificate of Educational Achievement, NCEA.
The work done throughout the year is assessed in two ways:
· Internal assessment – assignments and activities carried out throughout the year
· External assessment – an exam sat at the end of the year.
Topics covered include: mountain and rainforest landscapes; patterns of urban settlement in Dunedin, Auckland and London; disparities in development - USA and Tanzania; and global studies, issues and geographic research.
The year 12 course also has a greater emphasis on understanding geographic ideas, and perspectives eg Maori, gender or scientific. Further information is contained in the booklet.
