NCEA, UE, SCHOLARSHIP

Awards

1.         NCEA Level 1

Assessment is by either internally or externally assessed Achievement or Unit Standards. To gain a NCEA Level One Certificate, a minimum of 80 credits is required including literacy and numeracy credits.  (any 8 credits in English, any 8 credits in Maths)

2.         NCEA Level 2

Assessment is by either internally or externally assessed Achievement or Unit Standards. To gain a NCEA Level Two Certificate, a minimum of 80 credits is required. There are no literacy or numeracy requirements.  60 credits must be from Level 2 or higher and the remaining 20 may be from anywhere on the framework (this can include credits already gained at Level 1).

3.         NCEA Level 3

Assessment is by either internally or externally assessed Achievement Standards. To gain a NCEA Level Three Certificate, a minimum of 80 credits is required.  60 credits must be from Level 3 and the remaining 20 may be from Level 2 upwards.

4.         ENDORSEMENTS

All certificates (Level 1 – 3) can be gained with ‘endorsement’.  A student who gains 50 or more credits at Merit level (or higher) will gain a Merit endorsement.  Similarly, 50 or more credits at Excellence level will gain an Excellence endorsement.

5.         Scholarship

Students in a secondary school have the opportunity to gain a Scholarship.

Scholarship is a monetary award to recognise top students. It does not attract credits nor contribute towards a qualification but the fact that a student has gained a Scholarship appears on the Record of Achievement.

The Scholarship exams enable students to be assessed against challenging standards, and are demanding for the most able students in each subject. Scholarship students are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstraction and generalization, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding and ideas to complex situations.

If you are entered for Level 3 NCEA anyway, you may enter up to 3 scholarship standards at no extra cost in your fees.

Most, if not all, subjects areas will offer you the opportunity to enter scholarship.  Be aware that this will not necessarily mean that extra tuition will be given although it is likely that the Dunedin-wide tutorial scheme that has run in previous years will continue to do so this year.  Content for most scholarship subjects is the same as for Level 3 but assessed in greater depth.  Discuss with your teachers carefully before deciding if scholarship is appropriate for you.

5.         University Entrance

Minimum standard for 2010 is a total of 42 credits at Level 3 (ie 14 credits in 3 approved domains/subjects).  One of these lots of 14 credits may come from combining 2 seperate subjects eg 14 credits in English, 14 credits in Physics, 8 credits in Geography and 6 credits in Economics would meet the requirements.  In addition, literacy & numeracy requirements must be met (4 credits Level 2 reading, 4 credits Level 2 writing, 14 credits in maths Level 1 or higher).  Please note that a ‘course’ is not the same as a ‘subject’.  For instance a course in Yr 13 Art could possibly consist of 2 separate approved subjects eg Painting and Printmaking.
