What is in the Curriculum?

The curriculum contains six subject groups together with a core made up of three separate parts.  This is illustrated by a hexagon with the three parts of the core at its centre.Students study six subjects selected from the subject groups. Normally three subjects are studied at higher level (courses representing 240 teaching hours), and the remaining three subjects are studied at standard level (courses representing 150 teaching hours).

All three parts of the core—extended essay, theory of knowledge (TOK), and CAS (creativity, action, service)—are compulsory and are central to the philosophy of the Diploma Programme.  (see later sections)

Although the intent is for students to study one subject from each of the 6 groups, (Literature, 2nd Language, Humanities, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts) there is some flexibility in this.  Students may, for example, take 2 science subjects, a third language if desired, a second humanities subject etc.

The exact subjects being offered each year will depend on the level of interest from students, and this selection will likely increase as the programme continues to grow within the college.

Three subjects must be taken at Higher Level (HL).  The level of work for HL subjects could be reasonably compared to somewhere between NCEA Level 3 and first year university courses.

Three subjects must be taken at Standard Level (SL).  This level would equate to somewhere between NCEA Level 2 and Level 3.

Further details of each subject Group are included in later sections.
