South Island Net Play Championship

The John McGlashan Golf team travelled up to the South Island Netplay Championship in Oamaru between the 25th-28th of March 2014.  The courses to be played were:  Lower Waitaki and North Otago.  It was a rather unpleasant day to play golf on the Tuesday but the boys toughed it out posted some respectable scores.  The best of the day was from Tom Sycamore and Ryan Whelan who shot 1 under par being a net 68, which is pretty decent for 2 man Ambrose.  This score set team one in a great position leading into the following days.

On the Wednesday the format was 4-ball best ball.  It was a great day for golf and it showed with Ryan Whelan and Luke Davis Rae posting a net 64, which was one of the best scores of the day.

Coming into the final two days Oamaru really turned on the weather.  The Thursday format was Canadian Foursomes, which definitely caught some of the field’s players out because it was very complex.   Jordan Gain and Ryan Whelan had the best score out of JMC with an 8 under net being an outstanding display of golf.

The last day was the decider.  It was time for the individuals to stand up and show what they are made of.  Jordan Gain was 4 under his handicap, which is an amazing feat.  Also Luke Davis- Rae also had a solid even par.

This tournament was a great experience for the College’s younger golfers and is a competition we are looking to target in the coming years.  The JMC Team 1 finished 5th place and the JMC Team 2 finished in 8th.  These are great results putting in mind that for some of our players, it’s their first time playing some of these formats.  Overall it was a very successful week and one that we are looking forward in the not so distant future.

Special thanks must go to Murray Munro, Jane Davis-Rae, Nigel Perry, Adam Gain and Tony Sycamore for their transport and managerial support on the trip.
