Science Department 2018

The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not 'Eureka!' but 'That's funny...' Isaac Asimov

The past 12 months have been a very exciting time for the science department. Watching the new labs, prep room and bulk store take shape over almost three terms was awesome and after a well earned break for all involved, it was a pleasure to return to our new, modern and fresh teaching and learning environment.

This year we welcome Mr Hamish Cartwright to the science team. Hamish is teaching senior physics as well as general science and we welcome back Ms Emily Hall, also teaching in the area of senior physics.

Well done to all our senior students for all their achievements in the 2017 exams. Once again John McGlashan performed at the highest of levels nationally in the sciences.

The run of amazing weather seems set to continue for a while which bodes well for the term 1 field trips for biology, agribusiness and junior science. Hopefully it will be hats and sunblock rather than beanies and polar fleece.

Year 8 and 9 will be science fairing later this year but its never to early to get your thinking caps on. You may wish to investigate something over a few months to gather heaps of data, so if you have any ideas, talk to your science teacher.

Seniors are well into the term now, many involved in internal assessments in both NCEA and IB. These students should ensure they are looking at NZQA exemplars and seek clarification from their teachers if they are unsure of the requirements of a task they are working on.

Remember, make like a proton and remain positive
