Boarding at McGlashan College

Boarding has a long tradition at McGlashan and boarders, who make up about one quarter of the total roll, have a special place here. At present there are around 50 in Junior Hall and 60 in Senior Hall. House tutors, some teachers, the manager and his assistants supervise and care for our boarders during the term. Others employed in the boarding house include kitchen and cleaning staff, matron, maintenance and grounds people.

There is a close working relationship between the school and the boarding house and the boys have access to some school facilities and equipment
outside normal school hours. In addition, teachers communicate frequently with the Director of Boarding and other staff about boys’ progress, achievements and problems.

“Day-boy” parents are encouraged to invite boarders to their homes. It can improve relationships between town and country students and this can be helpful when boys are new to the school and to Dunedin.

We are pleased if your family has decided that you will join us at John McGlashan College as a Boarder next year. We will come to know you well as the months go by and we want to help you develop new skills and appropriate attitudes as you grow through the critical adolescent years. I am sure you will enjoy the experience. The information below is extracted from a booklet for new boarders, it will give you an insight into the way things happen at John McGlashan. If you want further information please do not hesitate to make contact. mmunro@mcglashan.school.nz

We have two Boarding Houses, called Senior Hall (now Balmacewen) and Junior Hall (Ross). The new senior hall consists of sixty single rooms in three wings of twenty. Junior Hall has two four bed rooms, five three bed rooms, fourteen two bed rooms and two single rooms. We all share the same dining room, laundry and other school facilities too. We usually have about 110 boys boarding, 60 in Senior Hall and 50 in Junior Hall. Boarding pupils start in Year 9 but most Dunedin people who attend John McGlashan College as day boys start in Year 7.
