Distance Learning

Online learning is now a reality for us in New Zealand. As per our on-going communication with you, our staff have been working extensively to ensure learning continues.

At John McGlashan College, we are proud to deliver our high-quality education. We are also proud that we will be able to do so under exceptional circumstances that may require partial or full campus closure at times. In such circumstances, our commitment is to provide an alternative means of education in the form of the College Distance Learning Plan.

The College Distance Learning experience aligns with our teaching and learning vision. Our students will be empowered to make choices about how they reach clearly defined learning goals; be engaged in [online] collaboration to solve authentic problems; feel safe to take intellectual risks while persevering through challenges; be supported with modeling, differentiation, specific feedback, and opportunities for reflection and revision; and, will continue to be passionate, intrinsically motivated, and inspired to action.

Year Level Distance Learning Foci

Years 7-8:

In years 7 & 8 we will offer a blend of online and independent structured learning, physical activity and time for personal projects.

Each form class will have a weekly schedule emailed and placed on their form class Google Classroom for students and parents to refer to or print off for reference. This schedule also includes times for physical activity and independent work time. The schedule can be used as a guide and some flexibility is aided by a checklist of activities to be done each day. All work will be led through Zoom meets or with details on Google Classroom.

Years 9-10:

Learning areas will be more tightly focused on English, Maths, Science, Social Studies (World Studies) & Languages.  Like in years 7 & 8 we will offer a blend of online and independent structured learning, physical activity and time for personal projects.

All students are scheduled for at least two online meetings per core subject per week.  These are all scheduled in morning sessions at usual period times (see KAMAR).  Some balance around the other option subjects will be expected as various teachers provide tasks that can be accessed independently without the need for online Zoom meetings.  This schedule also includes times for physical activity and independent work time. Some flexibility is aided by a checklist of activities to be done each day.  All work will be led through Zoom with details on Google Classroom.

Years 11-13:

All students are scheduled for at least two online meetings via Zoom per subject per week. These are all scheduled in morning sessions at usual period times (see KAMAR). The remaining time in spare periods in the morning and in the afternoon or evening should be spent working independently on tasks that have been set via Google Classroom.  Teachers will be available to conduct tutorials in the afternoon and at other times throughout the morning by appointment if this is required.

Online S.T.A.G.E. Challenge

Throughout the time that learning is by distance, all students at the College are invited to get involved in the inaugural JMC S.T.A.G.E. Challenge:

  • Service - See a need, fill a need. Help someone in the community.

  • Talent - Take the chance to develop a creative talent, be it art, music, dance, coding or other creative endeavours

  • Activity - Get physically active. Both aerobic and anaerobic is encouraged (PE department could send some ideas out).

  • Graduate - Academic based learning activities through classroom teachers.

  • Entrepreneurship - Develop a personal project either related to curriculum or non-curriculum ideas.

We will look to run a couple of different events online like:

  • a Service challenge to see who can record the highest number of verified service hours in a given period of time
  • An online Talent showcase where you can present your creative talents for others to enjoy

  • a physical Activity challenge to see who can be the best according to the set challenges

  • JMC’s very own Education Perfect Graduate class competition

  • an Entrepreneurship Dragon’s Den where you can pitch your design, product, or entrepreneurial idea.

Week 1 Challenge: Talent

Either re-create or make your own stop-motion or video floorscape adventure

Week 2 Challenge: Activity

Lockdown Table Challenge

Here is a good challenge for lockdown day inside.  See if you can complete one of the table challenges shown in the attached video without touching the floor. The second challenge along the length of the table is the hardest.

Notes:
- Make sure your table is solid enough to hold your weight
- An assistant may hold the table in place if it is going to tip over
- You can touch the legs of the table but not the floor
- The taller the table is the easier the challenge
