We are thrilled to announce the Head Prefect and Deputy Head Prefects for 2026!
These remarkable students have shown exceptional leadership qualities, dedication, and a strong commitment to our school community. They will play a vital role in supporting our school, representing the student body, and fostering a positive environment for everyone. We are confident that their leadership will guide us toward a successful year filled with collaboration and exciting initiatives!
The following words are from the boys:
Charlie
Gidday everyone,
My name is Charlie Falconer, and I am honoured to be your Head Prefect and Student Rep for 2026. I am very excited to be working alongside the boys next year, and hope to help each of them grow into true McGlashan men.
I am a boarder from Central Otago, and have been here since year 9. I love my cricket, hockey, and anything outdoors. I try to get involved with anything that is thrown at me, as we only have a finite amount of time at the college.
As a year 9 I had no idea what the next four years would bring. I remember asking a teacher whether we move classes every period, as I came from a small, remote school with nowhere near as many resources and opportunities as here. I soon realised that the possibilities are endless, and that McGlashan is more than just a facility.
This school may not be the biggest, and we might not always come out on top, but we have something many don’t. Our brotherhood, special character, and sense of belonging makes our school special. Will, Ryan, and I have a very easy job due to the boys being so good at what they do.
As we look into the future, I can’t wait to continue building on the legacy of those before us. If you ever need anything, or simply just want someone to talk to, feel free to come find me.
Cheers,
Charlie
Ryan
My name is Ryan Zhou, and I have been given the pleasure of being a Deputy Head Prefect for 2026.
I have lived in Dunedin my whole life, and in 2020 I arrived at the college as a day boy in Year 7 after attending Columba College for primary school. I still remember the awe I had for the school environment and all the older students around me.
Since I was young, I’ve always had a passion for learning. The numerous opportunities – such as the International Baccalaureate – provided at the school have broadened my worldview and only heightened my love for learning and reading.
Outside of academics, I’ve participated in numerous different extracurricular activities. Fencing and martial arts have been the backbone for my fitness and mental wellbeing. Some of my school highlights include performing as a pianist for the McGlashan Big Band, hiking the Kepler Track and going to Germany over Christmas for an exchange – experiences that have shaped me immensely.
Throughout my time at the college, I’ve been extremely fortunate to have been supported by many incredible student leaders. Now, I’m looking forward to fulfilling the same role to the younger students.
I am looking forward to working with the school and students next year.
Will
Kia ora, my name is William Laws, and I have the honour of being a Deputy Head Prefect for 2026.
I am a day boy, and my journey at the college began in 2022 as a year nine student. Growing up in Dunedin, I attended my local primary school in Waitati.
I am studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and I enjoy exploring ethical questions on a global scale, alongside studying mathematics and English.
Outside of the classroom, I am a passionate member of our Kapa Haka group Te Tira Haere o Te Hāhi, as well as a part of the Jazz Big Band and Small Combo playing the Tenor Saxophone. On the sports field, I play Football both for the College and the Dunedin City Royals.
The quote in the library, ‘To Those To Whom Much Has Been Given Much Will Be Expected’, constantly encourages me to value and take advantage of all the opportunities presented.
Next year, I aim to get alongside the students, find out what they enjoy and build a genuine connection. I want to help create an environment where every student feels confident to contribute, take pride in who they are, and make the most of what this amazing school has to offer.
Ngā mihi.
William Laws
