Throughout this last year, we went to Logan Park High School every fortnight on Wednesday to debate with other schools around Dunedin. This was a fantastic way to get out of the classroom environment while learning skills like speaking in front of people and coming up with cohesive ideas quickly.
Overall we made it to the semi finals after beating our way through incredible teams like Columba and OGHS. Personally, we learnt a lot about what debating was like and had an overall awesome experience doing so.
Throughout the debate season we had many highs and lows, some examples are: winning against the top Columba team, getting to experience questions or moots that we’ve never seen before and generally having a fun time bonding with each other. We only had a couple losses throughout the season which brought us to the semi finals where we faced off against Columba’s top team with a moot that was about deciding which football team you would choose as a young talented football player. In the end it was a close debate with it coming down to the last few points and the rebuttal from the last speakers but it ended up with a win from the Columba team as they made it into the finals. The finals however were not so close with a unanimous decision winning Columba the entire tournament.
You may be asking who is debating for and how do you sign up ? Debating is for anyone who has quite strong opinions or people who like to stand up and have a good back and forth discussion with other people. If this is you and you are coming into either Year 9 or up I would highly recommend trying debating by coming to see either Ms Smillie or Mr Schaumann
