It's been an awesome week of creativity and discovery.

The end of the year is a great time to try out something new, and our Year 10 students have been busy getting stuck into a variety of co-curricular workshops which challenge them to step outside their comfort zone with activities they wouldn't often get to try during the school year.

Sculpture with Mr Jones & Mr Clark

We're back in the woodwork room this year for macrocarpa duck carving and as always, it’s a popular activity blending woodworking and art!

It's awesome to see the boys away from their screens and focussing on something manual for the day, learning that you can have a lot of fun with just a block of wood and a chisel. The highly coveted ‘Duck of the Day’ prize has been a popular fixture each morning.

Theatre & Events Tech with Cue Go + Gravity Events

Our capable facilitators from Cue Go/Gravity have returned this year with a new workshop which explains the concepts in theatre and events technology, giving the boys a basis in lighting and stagecraft as well as hands-on experience with the equipment while they design plots and cues for their own conceptual events.

We've seen the boys making colourful lighting shows set to a wide variety of music, and shooting some great short videos to complement their learning.

Music Production with Rylan Urquhart

We’ve really enjoyed having JMC alumnus Rylan Urquhart back to share his music production knowledge with the boys, who’ve been busy making everything from hip-hop and dance music to classical and rock-style compositions.

There’s been a lot of smiling faces and laughter as the students are having fun exploring their unique musical styles. We'll be putting together a compilation of the tracks they've produced and sharing it with the group - it's set to be the soundtrack to summer!

Sāsā Dance with Isaac Tili

It’s been great to have Isaac back this year with a full-day Sāsā workshop in which the students create their own dance telling the story of what brings them together as a team. It's a great opportunity to get to know each-other better and get in sync both conceptually and rhythmically.

Family, sport, gaming, hunting and of course food have all been popular themes among the boys and it’s been great to see them creating their own unique routines - which we've been filming for them each day!

Peninsula Field Trip

To round out the week, we're heading out for a field trip on the Otago Peninsula starting with a series of talks at Ōkia Reserve (otherwise known as the Great Pyramids of Dunedin!) about the awesome local landscape and history in the area.

Afterwards, the group move to Te Rauone Reserve for some kai and games to wind down before next week's exciting Year 10 camps.

We'd like to extend a huge thank-you to all the tutors and teachers who've led & supported the week's activities. We really appreciate all of the new knowledge and skills you've shown our students!
