We’ve got plenty to celebrate in sport this week.

Cycling

A huge weekend for our Cycling Team at the South Island Road Champs in Christchurch. Josh, Oscar, Ruan and Harrison all competed — and competed hard.

  • Josh smashed it, taking gold in both U20 events.

  • Oscar was on the podium twice in U17 — 2nd in the road race, 3rd in the time trial.

  • Ruan and Harrison, sporting our new JMC jerseys, raced gutsy PBs in strong U16 and U14 fields.

As a team, JMC finished 6th overall out of 31 schools — an awesome effort!

Ice Hockey

Six McGlashan boys recently completed Round One of the National Ice Hockey Tournament here in Dunedin. Zac, Alex, Dino, Reuben, Ben and George played a massive 14 games between them for the Dunedin Junior Thunder.

They showed serious grit, skill and teamwork. With Round Two coming in September, they’re already back into training — great stuff.

Old Boy Shout out– Shay Veitch

Ex student Shay Veitch jumped a personal best of 8.04m to win at the World Athletics Continental Tour event in Belgium — just 1cm off the NZ record set in 1968. Incredible achievement!

Rugby League

Congrats to Harry Lithgow and Brayton Erskine — key players in Otago U18’s 58-0 win over Southland in the South Island Champs final. Harry’s now been selected for the South Island Scorpions, playing in nationals this September. Well done!

Taekwondo

A big shout-out to Year 10 student Dominic, who represented McGlashan at the Kukkiwon Cup NZ National Team Selection & International Taekwondo Tournament in Christchurch last month.

He earned a bronze medal in the Boys Colour Belt Poomsae division – a fantastic result, especially considering the challenges he’s overcome. He has won his black belt also. A true example of resilience, perseverance, and quiet determination. Well done, Dominic!

Football

Congrats to William Shen and Lachlan Hodgkin (Year 8), and Harry Dawson (Year 7), who were part of the Roslyn Wakari 12th Grade team that won the inaugural Green Island Winter Cup over the school holidays. The team went undefeated, with strong wins over teams from Dunedin, Invercargill, and Wānaka, and a 2-1 win in the final over Green Island.  They’ll now head to the South Island tournament in Blenheim this September. Good luck, boys!

Hockey

Our U15A team finished Tanner Cup with a strong 2-0 win over Christ’s, placing 11th overall. They trained hard, learned a lot, and finished proud.

Also, eight McGlashan boys were part of the Otago U18 Men’s team that made the National Final for the first time in 20 years. A tense semi-final went to a shootout — they held their nerve and came away with silver in the final. Awesome achievement.

This is great momentum for our 1st XI, who head off to the Rankin Cup soon. It's a brutal, high-level tournament — we’re currently ranked 8th in NZ and looking to climb. Let’s back them all the way as they continue to build their campaign over the coming weeks.

Rugby

The Rugby 1st IV team had a fantastic win on Tuesday evening against Saint Kevin's  36-12. With a quick turnaround, the boys are heading away on Friday night for their game against Southland Boys High School. We wish the team all the best for the tough match ahead!
