Manaakitaga in Action!
By Harry McDonald, Communications Prefect.
Last Saturday, the annual Relay For Life event was held in Dunedin. The purpose of this event is to celebrate those affected by cancer, remember those who we have lost, and raise awareness and funds for the Dunedin Cancer Society. The relay involves a team of people walking around the Forsyth Barr Stadium for 12 hours straight, with at least one member of each team walking the whole time.
This year, five year 11 boys - William C, Felix R, Toby E, Artie S and Artie T -organised for John McGlashan to have a team as a part of the event. As well as these boys, it was great to see many other students and staff present across different parts of the day, showing their support for a great cause. Although there were some mishaps with some poor choices of footwear resulting in plenty of blisters the next day, the JMC team showed plenty of courage across the day, putting up thousands of laps between them with Toby E alone clocking up 100 laps - made more impressive by the fact he did so in bare feet!
Overall, the day truly was a great success. The efforts and energy of the John McGlashan College contingent perfectly encapsulated our school values of Excellence, Respect and Manaakitanga. Although the day was great fun, it was also very sobering to hear stories from both survivors of cancer and those who have lost loved ones.
John McGlashan is proud to have contributed over $2800 to this worthy cause, where over $250,000 was raised for the Cancer Society. This was the most of any region in the country, truly illustrating the amazing community support for such a great event.
