Dunedin’s vibrant cultural scene just got an exciting new addition: the language exchange Café Babel! Naturally, we had to check it out and attended its lively launch event at Yours.
Café Babel is inspired by the German Stammtisch tradition, where people gather regularly around the same table to enjoy refreshments and exchange ideas. At Café Babel, each table is dedicated to a different language, hosted by native speakers, and attendees are free to move between tables to chat, sip coffee, or play games. Beyond conversations, activities, and interactive games provide an authentic way to practice languages.
Our students had the fantastic opportunity to meet native German speakers, put their language skills to the test with a game of Scrabble (including heated debates over whether abbreviations count – they don’t!), and pick up some German slang from other young attendees.
Alongside a bustling German table, there were also tables for French, Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese speakers and learners.
We’re excited to see Café Babel grow to include even more languages, and we’ll be sure to represent the German table in the future. No language skills are needed to join—so why not come along next time?
