On Excellence ...

You have heard about excellence, and how it is not about being perfect or better than others, but about building good habits and consistently striving to become the best version of yourself.

Excellence is different for everyone. For some, it might be putting in a lot of effort and extra hours to pass their internal, and for others, it might be working for higher grades like merit or excellence. Excellence may be different from person to person, but the same standards of discipline and hard work apply.

But it does not matter where you become most excellent, whether that's in the classroom, on the sports field, or in the arts. The main habits to strive towards excellence are hard work, discipline, and resilience

Most importantly, learning from failure. To learn from failure is the hardest thing to do.

To look back at what could have been is hard.

Last year I failed, I was trying to make highlander schools and didn’t, and I was very disappointed. But instead of sitting around being sad about missing selection I looked back on my season, reflected on the good and the bad. I learned from my failure and used that to develop and motivate myself to push even harder

So boys, I challenge you to push yourself and finish the term strong. Start building small habits, so you can start to aim higher. If you fail, use its teachings to be better.

I’ll leave you with a quote from Ralph Marston

“Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude."
