Learning in the Wild: Schools Connect with Nature at Te Kūwaha

Tuesday 18th November 2025

Te Kūwaha Mātauraka has enjoyed a lively week of hands-on learning, welcoming students from Te Anau Primary School and John McGlashan College as they explored the outdoors, tackled new challenges, and connected with the Fiordland environment.

Over the past week, Te Kūwaha Mātauraka has had the pleasure of hosting two very different but equally enthusiastic groups: Te Anau Primary School and the John McGlashan College IB camp.

The visit from Te Anau Primary began with a simple question from Mrs. Fedorson to her Year 6 class: What would you like to do for your end-of-year experience? The students put forward the idea of coming to our lodge to try our orienteering course, and from there the day quickly expanded into a full programme. Disc golf, orienteering, the waterslide, and ABL activities kept the students busy from start to finish. It was a real honour to have them on site, and they represented their school with maturity, enthusiasm, and great teamwork.

At the same time, our lodge has been home to the John McGlashan IB boys, who have been undertaking a collaborative science project focused on assessing local water health and quality. Their work has involved sampling a range of water sources and analysing the data as part of their broader science curriculum. Outside of their project work, the group has also taken the opportunity to engage in astronomy, complete service components, and enjoy some fishing in the area.

It has been a vibrant and rewarding week at Te Kūwaha Mātauraka, and we feel privileged to support such diverse learning experiences in our unique environment.
