Year 7 Camp – A Week to Remember

Wednesday 15th October 2025

Last week’s Year 7 camp at Te Kūwaha Mātauraka was one to remember. From the moment the boys arrived until the buses pulled away, the energy, teamwork, and positive attitude were incredible. It truly felt like the best camp yet.

While I seem to say this every time, I genuinely felt that last week’s Year 7 camp was the best one I’ve been involved with.

On Friday afternoon, after the boys had left, I sat down and realised there was nothing to clean up — they had left the place spotless! It’s always a bit of an adjustment when a camp finishes. We go from being full-on and buzzing with energy to suddenly quiet. But what a week it was — the boys absolutely shone. Whether it was orienteering, kayaking, tramping, or simply helping around camp, their attitude and enthusiasm were outstanding.

It’s important to remember that Outdoor Education is about much more than the big activities. The learning happens just as much in the small things — rolling up a hose, sweeping the floor, doing the dishes, or making a bed. These moments teach teamwork, responsibility, and independence just as much as the adventures out on the lake or track.

I hope the boys all went home raving about their week at Te Kūwaha Mātauraka and feeling proud of what they achieved.

I’ve included one photo here, but Lisa will be sharing the rest with you. All the photos have also been uploaded to our Facebook page.

A huge thank you to Lisa, who was super organised on her first camp, and to all the other staff, parents, photographers, and cooks — it simply wouldn’t be possible without you.

Currently, we’re hosting a group from Dunedin — the Ōtepoti Trampers — in the Kohaka Lodge. They’re here for the week, exploring some of Fiordland’s great day walks. While the weather hasn’t been ideal, they’re making the most of the opportunity with Fiordland right on their doorstep.
