Charlie's 'Last Word' from the Old Collegians' Assembly
Gidday Boys,
I’d like to start by thanking the two renowned men, acknowledged at the Old Collegians assembly. They have both made a name for themselves through their successes and their contributions to society. Mr Cottle has helped us understand the world as we know it. Mr Baigent helped fight for the freedom we have today. We thank these men for what they have done, not only for our school, but also for New Zealand and the world.
As a family, we are proud to associate ourselves with these men. Through celebrating their successes, I hope you boys realise that this could one day be you. Before the medals and professorships, they were boys here, just like you.
Blazers a little too long. Sleeves past their wrists. This school probably wasn’t the place where they learnt how to fly a bomber or analyse tectonic plates, but this was the place where they learnt to explore. It was here that their curiosity was sparked, and they became happy to step out of their comfort zones. They built on their values and morals, and laid their roots deep into the school.
At the moment, many of you don’t know where your journey is going to take you. However, the little things that you do today will shape the person you are tomorrow. It’s the excellence you strive for. It's the respect you show to others. It's the manaakitanga you show to the community. These decisions slowly turn into habits, and you end up doing the right thing without needing recognized. That's what will follow you beyond the school gates, and can help you make your mark in society.
On that note, I thought I should end this with a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt. “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” So back yourselves. Take the risk. Make the leap. Step forward without hesitation. Because you never know how you might impact the world.
Thank You
