There has been plenty to celebrate in sport this term, here are just some of the highlights!
Alumni Success – Shay Veitch
Old Collegian Shay Veitch jumped a personal best of 8.04m to win at the World Athletics Continental Tour event in Belgium — just 1cm off the NZ record set in 1968. Incredible achievement!
Hockey
Our Hockey 1st XI took out the season final against OB’s in a nail-biting penalty shootout. The boys then headed to the Rankin Cup National Tournament which consisted of the top 32 school teams in the country, where they battled for 23rd and 24th against Otago Boys' once more, taking out the 24th spot. Our Hockey 2nd XI boys headed off to the Galletly Cup where they placed 7th!
Our U15 hockey boys showed great determination in the Division 2 Secondary Schools competition, narrowly going down to an OB’s 2nd XI team stacked with Year 13 players. They trained hard, learned a lot, and finished proud.
Eight McGlashan boys were part of the Otago U18 Men’s team that made the National Final for the first time in 20 years! A tense semi-final went to a shootout — they held their nerve and came away with silver in the final. An awesome achievement.
Kartsport
Year 9 students Jack and Theo attended Kartsport Canterbury Derby Day. Racing in the Jr Rotax 125 and Jr Briggs LO206 classes, respectively.
Jack came out the gate and was dialed in on the cool track from the first corner. A fantastic day on an evolving track and great driving in a class field with a win in the strong 14 kart field.
Theo was getting to grips with his new kart and only second time on the unfamiliar track in Canterbury. His sights are firmly set on moving from Jr to the more competitive Snr ranks come the 1st of January 2026.
Cycling
Our Cycling Team attended the South Island Road Champs in Christchurch. Josh, Oscar, Ruan and Harrison all competed:
Josh took gold in both U20 events.
Oscar was on the podium twice in U17 — 2nd in the road race, 3rd in the time trial.
Ruan and Harrison, sporting our new JMC jerseys, raced gutsy PBs in strong U16 and U14 fields.
As a team, JMC finished 6th overall out of 31 schools — an awesome effort!
Football
In Football, the First XI headed off to Christchurch for Winter Tournament Week where they finished in 14th place amidst tough competition. They managed to fit in some beach football at Sumner during their down time!
Rugby
The Under-15 rugby side achieved its best-ever result at the prestigious Hurricanes Tournament this year.
This is the sixth time the JMC U15 rugby team have competed in this tournament and our previous best result was 7th place, this year, the boys finished an impressive 3rd out of 20 teams!
Swimming
Burns have taken out the swimming sports this year!
The highlight of the swimming sports - our own resident Olympic swimmer, Mr Kane Follows, jumped in the pool and single handedly took on our four fastest swimmers in a relay...and won!
In other swimming news, Hugo recently attended the NZ Secondary School Swimming Champs in Hamilton. He swam 10 events over 4 days. Hugo had an exceptional meet and achieved personal best times in 7 out of his 10 races. His top placing was 4th in 200m Breaststroke (only .1 sec off getting a bronze medal)
He also placed 7th in both the 50m and 100m Breaststroke events.
Ice Luge
The New Zealand natural ice luge season has wrapped up in Naseby with success for JMC boys.
Oszkár was the NZ Junior champ, with Quinn placing second.
Liam placed third in the Senior men (his first season as a senior) and Liam and Quinn together placed second in the open doubles.
Table Tennis
Thomas has been putting in the hard yards with his table tennis - with training, interclub and club nights five days a week, Thomas is all in. Over the holidays, he was selected for the U15 Otago Team heading to Nationals in Auckland. Well done Thomas!
Gymnastics
Blake took placings in both Rings and Vault at the Canterbury Gymnastics Champs. Happy to be back to strength after a serious arm break earlier this year.
Ice Hockey
Six McGlashan boys recently completed Round One of the National Ice Hockey Tournament here in Dunedin. Zac, Alex, Dino, Reuben, Ben and George played a massive 14 games between them for the Dunedin Junior Thunder!
Rugby League
Congrats to Harry Lithgow and Brayton Erskine — key players in Otago U18’s 58-0 win over Southland in the South Island Champs final. Harry’s now been selected for the South Island Scorpions, playing in nationals in September. Well done!
Basketball
In Basketball, our Junior team travelled to Nelson for Winter Tournament Week where they won the South Island Secondary Schools B grade with 52 teams total in the competition!
Taekwondo
A big shout-out to Year 10 student Dominic, who represented McGlashan at the Kukkiwon Cup NZ National Team Selection & International Taekwondo Tournament in Christchurch.
He earned a bronze medal in the Boys Colour Belt Poomsae division – a fantastic result, especially considering the challenges he’s overcome. He has won his black belt also. A true example of resilience, perseverance, and quiet determination.
Cross Country
A big effort from our boys at the Otago Yr 7/8 Cross Country Champs this year, and a special mention to Luie who took out 2nd place!
