The JMC Old Boys Golf Tournament, disrupted by COVID for a few years, had a great revival at the end of term 1 on Thursday, 6th April.
The event was hosted superbly by Otago Golf Club and welcomed back by Mr Andrew Hore accompanied by our very own John McGlashan piper Qwenton McKenzie (also deputy head boy) and Marco Hartono, head boy.
The weather wasn’t the best, but the 26 teams registered didn’t let that hold them back. The clubroom was abuzz at the end of the day, and it was great to see so many old boys, parents, and grandparents of current boys making up teams. We had some creative names: ‘The Young and the Restless’, ‘Past, Parent, Present and Putter’, and ‘Par Tee’ being a few of the favourites. We were delighted that Rick Medder won the ‘Old Boys’ Cup, the runner-up being Joe Baker and third, Jack Murray. Our first team prize was taken out by Commodore Motels (Rick and Baxter Medder, Norcombe Barker, and Dan Gi), the Second Team Prize went to Webb Farry (Tom Clout, Lyane Jones, Josh Cultance, and Josh Finnie), and the Third team prize went to Par-Tee (Andrew Sim, Mark Fraser, Alasdair Johnston, and Nick Fraser).Mr Neil Garry (Principal JMC) arrived to be involved in the prize-giving ceremony and was delighted to meet up with many old faces and share in the warmth of our wider John McGlashan community alongside Mr Nigel Hunter (Deputy Principal). The 15th hole, sponsored by Resolution Farm Management, was a major on-course highlight, with Matt and Kerry supplying and running the daily BBQ. Their support was exceptional and is truly appreciated.
Our very generous sponsors were:
Hamish Walker Prime Real Estate Queenstown
Jo and Walter O’Neill
The money raised from the event will go towards golf at John McGlashan. In particular, we are working on ramping up coaching opportunities for Year 7-10 golfers. We also have a camp planned for the September holidays in Central Otago, and funds will also support our A team, who qualified for the Intercollegiate Nationals in Aorangi in August. Special thanks go to the JMC Golf Committee, headed by Jo Lewis, for all their efforts and hard work.
