Each week this term we will be delving into online safety with cyber safety expert, John Parsons, to help our community navigate some of the tricky situations that can arise while raising teens in an online world.
John Parsons is a New Zealand based Cyber Safety and Risk Assessment Consultant who works with education, health and private sectors, providing specialist advice and direction on the safe and ethical use of Digital Communication Technology. John is a published author of “Keeping Your Children Safe Online” and a social commentator who works throughout New Zealand and Internationally.
In today’s digital world, online safety is essential for every student. At McGlashan, we are committed to equipping our students with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the online environment responsibly and securely. This week John has been on site presenting to students in sessions that were very well received and topical.
This week we are taking a look at 'Gut Feelings':
GUT FEELINGS, TEACH CHILDREN NOT TO IGNORE THEM (click to watch)
All children should be taught the value of responding to those feelings that make them feel uneasy, nauseous, suspicious of a person and or place. Children often tell me it's a faint voice in their head that tells them, "This doesn't seem right", but they can't work out what is actually causing the sensation. Teach your children they don't need to work it all out. Let them know it's better to think of the feeling as their bodies way of communicating there could be a problem, so talk to an adult you trust. Intuition is a valuable tool that we all have, and it can, and does save lives.
