We shared a piece last week that critiqued Louis Theroux's documentary on the manosphere and provided a list of helpful questions to engage your son in discussion.
As Ingrid Howren at the Crowther Centre in Melbourne explains, manosphere influencers reinforce rigid gender norms and promote unhelpful messaging on how boys and young men “should be”. This is often framed as advice on achieving success and navigating everyday life.
Social media is a platform by which these 'influencers' expound and propagate their message. Ray Swann, who also works out of the Crowther Centre and heads up the Foundation for Positive Masculinity, shares his views that boys now find peer connection, gaming, and entertainment instantly with a device. 'Laughter', he continues, was once 'described as the shortest distance between two people - but now it’s been replaced with a handheld device.'
In this short article, Ray explores how we can protect our young people from the harmful impacts of too much time online. This has resonance for the manosphere discussion. You can read the article, Getting My Son off His Device, here.
