Fiordland National Park Lodge/Te Anau Downs Campus Update

Thursday 4th May 2023

Steady progress is being made at the Lodge and Backpackers with significant construction work being undertaken by ABL Invercargill. The work is overseen by project managers Feldspar as part of our overall business plan for the campus. These developments will ensure that the buildings meet the highest standards of earthquake resilience and fire safety. Approval has been sought from the Southland District Council and Department of Conservation to build a large storage shed and undertake some levelling of ground space for outdoor activities.

In addition, the Parents and Friends' Association has approved funding for ten sea kayaks and a large, purpose-built trailer. A 4.5m superjet, tunnel-hulled, inflatable boat with a 50 horsepower Tohatsu two-stroke jet unit with a trailer has also been purchased.

Crafted curriculum programmes are being developed by staff to ensure a staged delivery for Years 7 to 10. A group of staff have also visited the St Paul’s Collegiate Tihoi Outdoor Pursuits Centre to research best practices in our teaching programmes.

The construction work at the Backpackers is likely to be completed by late June and the Lodge by September. We intend to hold an opening function in the third week of September.

Further updates will be provided in subsequent newsletters.

All going well, camps should be underway later in the year.

Ngā mihi nui,

Neil Garry
