Spotlight on the Curriculum: Year 13 and Year 7 Boys Fire Up Friendships

Tuesday 17th February 2026

On a wet and chilly Dunedin day, the BBQ was fired up for a special first time get together.

With rain in the air and cold hands all around, the boys huddled closely around the sizzling sausages, doing their best to stay warm while perfecting their cooking skills. The smell of kai on the grill mixed with the sound of cheerful chatter and plenty of good natured banter. It was the perfect recipe for introductions!

Once the sausages were cooked and the weather proved a little too determined, the group moved into the Link to eat and mingle. What followed was a lot of laughter, storytelling, and reminiscing. The Year 13 boys reflected on their very first day at school remembering what it felt like to be the new Year 7 students. Fast forward seven years, and here they are now leaders of the school, making history in their final year and guiding the next generation.

After refuelling, it was off to the gym for some multi-sport action. Organising teams was an event in itself at one point it looked a bit like sheep being herded through the gates! The loud chatter and selective listening made for what teachers might call “a character-building moment”… a classic “now you know how we feel!” experience.

With teams made up of both Year 7 and Year 13 students, the games began. Competition levels were high especially from the Year 13 boys, but the Year 7s were not backing down! They played hard, showed determination, and kept the scores incredibly close. In fact, only a couple of points separated the teams at the final whistle.

But in truth, the real win of the day wasn’t the scoreboard, it was the connection between year levels, the mix of ages. The leadership shown by the seniors and the enthusiasm brought by the juniors. It was about coming together, sharing stories, making memories, and building friendships that will last well beyond one Friday afternoon.
