Exams and Camp: A Recap of a Big Week in German!

Wednesday 7th May 2025

So much has been happening in the German department lately, we almost ran out of room in the Hail newsletter!

This edition includes a throwback to the jam-packed week before the term break—a whirlwind of exams, adventures, and unforgettable German moments.

First up: a visit from Beate and Yona of the Goethe-Institut, who flew in all the way from Auckland to give our students the opportunity to sit the official A1 and A2 German exams. These internationally recognised diplomas certify German language proficiency—and can open doors for study, travel, and career opportunities around the world. A big Herzlichen Glückwunsch to everyone who passed last year, and good luck to all this term’s exam-takers!

No time to rest, though—the very next day, our senior German students headed off to Tirohanga for a two-day language camp, joining forces with Otago Boys’ High School, Bayfield High School, Columba College, and Logan Park High School. In total, 60 enthusiastic students took part in this immersive German experience.

The theme? “35 Jahre Mauerfall” (“35 Years Since the Fall of the Berlin Wall”). We kicked off with Berlin’s favourite street food, Döner Kebap, before diving into the history of the Berlin wall through interactive group activities. Huge thanks to Beate and Yona again for their creative and inspiring workshops!

Of course, no camp is complete without a bit of friendly competition—the annual cake contest was a definite highlight! After a dinner of Currywurst und Pommes, students put their knowledge to the test in a lively German quiz.

The next morning began with a classic German breakfast: crusty bread rolls, cheese, jam, and fresh fruit. Then came the grand finale—student performances inspired by everything they’d learned. From a protest song against fascism and a moving play about a family divided by the wall, to poetry and a fictional interview between East and West Germany, the creativity on display was truly beeindruckend!

After a hearty lunch of Wurst and Kartoffelsalat, we packed up and headed back to Dunedin—tired but inspired.

A huge Dankeschön to Huzur Kebab and Deep Creek Deli for their amazing support with the food.

Bis nächstes Jahr!
