JMC intercollegiate golf team travelled to Cromwell for the Regional Tournament.
The tournament was held at the esteemed Cromwell Golf Club, recognised as New Zealand's most inland links course. Established in 1946, the championship course features sand-based fairways, ensuring year-round dry conditions. Playing to a par of 72 and stretching 6,462 yards, the course presented a formidable test for all competitors.
On 3 March, the team faced blustery and cool autumn conditions, with temperatures around 17°C. Despite their previous successes, having qualified for nationals in the past two years, the team secured a respectable third-place finish this year. Connor Howes delivered a standout performance, shooting a commendable 1-over-par round of 71. Teammates Lachlan Davies and Oliver Schonthal showcased solid play scoring in the early 80's, gaining invaluable experience and demonstrating moments of brilliance throughout their rounds.
Additionally, B team members Geordie MacDonald, Matt Hanna, and Caleb Ung contributed positively to the team's overall performance. Their participation in such a high-stakes tournament not only reflects their dedication but also adds valuable experience to their golfing careers.
Throughout the tournament, the JMC golfers exemplified sportsmanship and leadership, serving as commendable role models for their peers. Their conduct both on and off the course highlighted the values of integrity and teamwork, reinforcing the reputation of JMC Golf.
The team's collective efforts and resilience in the face of challenging conditions highlight their commitment and potential for future competitions.
Last week, Connor had the unique opportunity to rub shoulders with some of golf's most esteemed figures when he caddied for Kevin Yuan during the New Zealand Golf Open at Millbrook Resort. Notably, he was part of a group that included Steve Williams, renowned as Tiger Woods' former caddie, and Daniel Hillier, currently one of New Zealand's top golfers.
For Connor, this experience was invaluable, offering insights into the professional golfing world and the chance to learn from some of the best in the game.
