Term 2, Week 3: 14 February
Tēnā koutou,
This week at Assembly, we had the pleasure of celebrating the Year 13 boys who were awarded Scholar awards, as well as announcing the full list of prefects for 2025. After careful consideration, the final group of prefects consists of an even mix of six day boys and six boarders. We have high expectations for these students to be strong leaders for the College this year.
We were pleased to see great readership of the first edition of the Pilkington Press last week. Going forward, the weekly edition will be sent out every Friday during term time around 1:00pm. Keep an eye out for that email to stay up to date with all the happenings at John McGlashan
College.
The Year 13 boys thoroughly enjoyed their leadership camp in Te Anau last week. Meanwhile, the first Year 9 camp is running smoothly, with the boys staying busy with outdoor activities. One interesting piece of feedback from the Year 13 boys was how much they appreciated having their phones taken away for the duration of the camp. This may be something for parents to consider when planning dedicated time away from technology for their sons.
We are excited to announce the official opening of our second campus on March 1. The campus will be open from 3:00pm to 4:00pm that day, and we warmly invite the community to come and see the changes we've made. If you're in the Te Anau area on that day, we would love to welcome you.
Next Friday, John McGlashan parents will receive their first Progress Report. As mentioned last week, we’ve made a change from the previous fortnightly reports to issuing progress reports every three weeks. This allows each boy to receive three grades instead of one, and gives teachers more time to assess their boys over a longer period.
A small group of us from the College had the opportunity to represent the College at the Central Otago A&P Show in Omakau last weekend. It was a fantastic occasion to reconnect with current parents, alumni from various generations, and meet some prospective families, all in the heat of 32 degrees! We’re now looking forward to our upcoming round of country visits, starting with Gore on Thursday 20 February, followed by Ranfurly, Alexandra, and Wānaka.
Kā mihi,
John Veitch
Acting Principal
