Caring Beyond the Curriculum

It is a known fact that IBDP students have an awareness of issues affecting their world and want to do something about it!

In the IBDP Theory of Knowledge class, we always ask questions. So here is one for you.

Question: What do bandages and paracetamol have in common?

Answer: They both mask an underlying issue.

This week in the IBDP Core class, we started a unit of inquiry into the role that Social Sciences plays in the development of knowledge.

Social sciences play a vital role in developing knowledge by exploring human behaviour, culture, economics, and social structures to name a few.

One of the key debates this week was about the social issue of Gambling.

  • What aspects make gambling a social issue?

  • Should gambling be restricted or unrestricted for all or for some? i.e. taking a utilitarian vs totalitarian point of view.

  • Who decides what form of gambling we can/cannot do?

Through interdisciplinary learning in the IBDP and social sciences specifically; we can connect with disciplines like politics, economics, law, psychology, philosophy, and ethics to address the issues.

We don't just look at the surface issue and mask it, we get to the core of the issue to find out what really is going on!

More questions... (as usual)

So, how do we address the social issue of gambling? Will we solve the problem if we focus ONLY on the law and the rules around it? What role does psychology play in gambling? What are we missing?

We realise that we have to approach the issue from an interdisciplinary view to gain a deeper understanding from multiple perspectives.

What masks has our community/society put on top of the deeper issues below the surface?
