Welcome to this week's edition of the John McGlashan Pilkington Press.
Tēnā koutou,
We have had a strong start to the second term. The boys have come back well rested and ready for what will be a short, but busy term ahead. All of the rugby boys and parents made it safely back from the Japan trip where they had a wonderful time on and off the field and had many stories to share about their amazing experience.
This week the Year 13 PE class have gone to Te Kūwaha Mātauraka for their kayaking camp. It was cold, but the boys had a great time exploring the areas around Lakes Te Anau and Lake Manapouri. Please be reminded that our second campus in Te Anau is open for McGlashan parents to book for groups. You can find out more information about that here.
We have our annual STAC Winter Sports Exchange on this Sunday and Monday. This is the first of our regular exchanges and we are looking to having many good match ups over the two days. This has linked in well with the Otago Tertiary Open Days, also on Sunday and Monday.
In the arts, we are all still buzzing about our boys winning the Otago Shakespeare Festival with their creative ‘Barbie’ theme. They are now going on to represent the college in Wellington in the National finals. The boys are going to show us their performance at a school assembly in a couple of weeks.
New Zealand Music Month started yesterday and we are organising performances in the quad and the library all month. Rock Quest Heats take place on Saturday May 10. We have many boys entered and if parents are interested, they can head along the Taieri College Performing Arts Centre to support the boys.
There are many other arts opportunities that were sent out at the end of last term via email to all students and parents - everything from Creative Writing, Film Competitions & Kapa Haka to Improv Club, Pipe Band & Art/Photography Competitions.
A huge congratulations to Tim Stevens, who has been selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Choir following a competitive nationwide audition. He spent part of the holidays rehearsing with the choir in Wellington and may have the chance to participate in international competitions in the near future.
At this week’s school assembly, eight of our Year 13 students took the stage to present highlights from the Japan rugby tour, upcoming arts opportunities, and ways students can get involved in winter sport. We also announced the upcoming Academic Blues Assembly, where we’ll celebrate the achievements of our top scholars.
The Sports Committee are looking forward to seeing McGlashan families at our annual Sports Fundraising Dinner on Friday June 13th. This is a fun, social evening, and one of the best ways to meet other parents. All money raised on the night goes towards coaching at school, across all codes. This year we are lucky to have secured Mark Inglis as our guest speaker. You will find further details and ticketing information on the poster below. We look forward to seeing you there!
Kā mihi,
John Veitch
