Recently we shared that five staff travelled to hear Doug Lemov speak about Teach Like a Champion. Over the last two weeks they have led whole-school professional learning sessions, sharing practical strategies to strengthen learning across the College. The focus was on a simple but important idea: learning is remembering.
Teachers explored how memory works, particularly the difference between short-term working memory and long-term memory. Research shows students forget much of what they learn unless knowledge is deliberately revisited and practised. This reinforces the importance of retrieval, repetition, and structured practice.
As part of this work, several strategies will become used in classrooms. These include:
Clear entry routines to maximise learning time
Short review or “Do Now” tasks to revisit prior knowledge
Regular low-stakes writing to strengthen thinking
Structured discussion strategies to increase participation
Deliberate questioning to check understanding
A strong “knowledge first” approach before moving to analysis and evaluation
The aim is simple: ensure all boys are thinking deeply, participating actively, and retaining what they learn.
This work reflects our ongoing commitment to academic rigour and high-quality teaching across the school.
