Welcome to this week's edition of the John McGlashan Pilkington Press.
Tēnā koutou,
A huge congratulations to our Shakespeare team for their outstanding performance in Wellington last weekend. The group was awarded the Outstanding Presentation from a Comedy Award, a recognition on similar to winning a national sporting title. Special mention goes to Glenn Ericsson, who received the Outstanding Individual Comic Role Award for his hilarious Barbie-style portrayal of Kate. Many of this group will now focus on their roles in Columba's upcoming production of Mary Poppins, taking place at the Mayfair Theatre from 4–7 June.
On the sports front, our 1st XV rugby team pulled off an amazing victory against Otago Boys' High School last Saturday. After trailing 5–12 at halftime, the team fought back, despite facing a strong gale in the second half, to score four tries to win 29–26. A truly gutsy effort that we’re all incredibly proud of.
In hockey, the weekend saw several McGlashan players travel to Christchurch to represent Otago in the Mainland Cup. It’s fantastic to consistently see more than half-a-dozen of our boys selected to represent Otago at the national level.
At this week’s assembly, we celebrated achievements across both the arts and sports. We congratulated Noah and Kura for their impressive efforts at Nga Manu Korero and heard from one of the three groups who represented John McGlashan in the recent Chamber Music New Zealand competition.
Also at assembly we once again went over the three focus words that we want our boys to be always conscious of. Respect is the key term that we talk about. The other two words have been brotherhood and excellence. It was easy to talk about how these two works were on show in the last week with our sporting endeavours, the Kapa Haka support for our Nga Manu Korero speakers and of course with our Shakespeare boys.
It’s been a relatively quiet week, with only our Year 7 boys heading out on a field trip to the Toitū Otago Settlers Museum. Next week promises to be full of activity as we celebrate International Languages Week, with daily events for the boys to get involved with. We’re also looking forward to the annual JMC Sports Dinner, happening next Friday night.
Our new JMC Health Hub on our College website was launched to the staff this week. This is a ‘one stop shop’ for teachers, boys, and also parents for all areas of health. I encourage parents to have a look at this as it is not only impressive, it is incredibly informative and can give parents tools to start positive conversations with their sons. Simply click here.
Kā mihi,
John Veitch
