Helping Hands leads to Academic Ascent...we need your help!

Monday 9th March 2026

Asking for help with reaching our academic goals is 'just what we do' at McGlashan. Our Learning Support department really appreciates our community assistance, and we need more volunteers to help us help the students.

It is really encouraging to see so many students take advantage of the opportunity to receive extra support with their learning. Students come to Peer Tutoring with many different goals in mind. For some, it is to help fill learning gaps; for others, it is to push towards higher grades. We are very lucky to have a wonderful group of students who are willing to give of their time to help others reach their goals.

Within the Learning Support department we are always looking for people that are able and willing to support our learners. We are incredibly lucky as a school community to have so many parents, grandparents, friends, and family members willing to give their time and skills to support the students in so many different ways.

While we have a couple of times each year when we need to rally the troops (NCEA senior benchmark exams, Junior exams, and now the co-requisite assessments), this volunteer support is also required throughout the year.

Providing consistent use of this support for the students who require it means they have the opportunity to develop their skills in working with support and receive authentic feedback on where they are with their learning and what they need to focus on next.

Our ability to provide reader/writer or separate accommodation supervision for our students with specific learning needs allows them to demonstrate their knowledge without being limited by their learning challenges.

We have a small group of parents who regularly pop into school to support students as readers/writers, and we are really grateful for this ongoing support.

If you are interested in joining this group, please contact Penny Ferguson (Learning Support Administration) to find out more. Or register your interest here: https://forms.gle/zCq3EXfApBC3WKsT7

When the need arises, Penny will contact those on the Volunteer List. If you are available, we'd love to see you; if not, we will contact you again for the next opportunity.

Our students are very lucky to have these levels of support around them, but it would not be possible without our wonderful McGlashan Community.
