Spanish students and German students join and share a meal in an exchange of language and culture.

Last Tuesday, in the Year 2 IB Spanish class, the Spanish students invited the German students to join and share a meal in an exchange of language and culture.

The event was graciously organised the week prior with the help of Ms Navarro. All the Spanish students contributed so that we could have a shared lunch of tacos and fajitas. There was enough to go around, so they were joined by the German students, who made it an impromptu language class’s shared lunch. Together, they participated in an exchange of language and cultural norms over traditional Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. Tacos, consisting of carne molita (ground beef), and pollo asado (grilled chicken).

This Monday, it was the IB German classes turn to repay with hospitality, inviting the Spanish class over for a sweet treat. With the help of Frau Cooke and Frau Renner, Herzwaffeln was offered.

Herzwaffeln are German waffles which can be split into the shape of hearts. After a quick German lesson, the Spanish students came over and asked in German for a waffle, and additional toppings, such as Apfelmus (apple sauce), Sahne (whipped cream), Zimt und Zucker (cinnamon and sugar), and Puderzucker (powdered sugar).

This will now happen once every term, where the exchanging of culture allows us to better understand others and our own.
