An easy way to maintain literacy skills over the long holiday break is to read for pleasure. Our Summer Book Bags are perfect for this.
For many years now, students at John McGlashan College have been given the opportunity to borrow a bag full of library books over the summer holidays. The aim is to provide access to books and encourage the boys to keep reading, so that their literacy skills do not 'slide' backwards due to lack of use. Recent research suggests that even avid readers will experience a decline in skill level if they do not maintain their reading habit. An element of choice is also important for successful reading engagement, which is why the boys choose their own library books and magazines to go in their Summer Book Bags.
This year, we have lovely new bags courtesy of the Parents and Friends Association. The boys will also find a few treats, some information about using our ePlatform for ebooks and audio books, and a Three Word Book Review competition in their bags. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have borrowed a total of 1,145 books for the holidays, so they are very well prepared for some exciting reading adventures!
Each student's Summer Book Bag contains a list of the books on issue to them. Please ensure all books and the bags are returned to the library on the first day of school in 2025.
We would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday. We look forward to seeing the boys in the library again in 2025.
