Google gives their employees 20% of the time they work there to spend time on their passion projects, and our Year 8s at John McGlashan have followed their lead.

Operating under the Headway program, these young men spent weeks directing their own learning, so that they could develop a personal passion project and create something truly outstanding.
The exhibition commenced at the podium, where Ray Z (8RMI) and Andrew S (8LWI) stepped up to warmly welcome the crowd with an engaging opening introduction.
Following the greeting, the Year 8 cohort gathered at the front of the stage to deliver a powerful performance of the school waiata, setting a powerful tone for the rest of the night.
The final projects showcased an incredible variety of talent. Displays ranged from culinary creations – like Isaac H (8LWI) – to video production – like Bear V (8RMI).
Taking innovation to the next level, Olly B (8LWI) even successfully converted a standard bicycle into a fully functional e-bike.
Sajid O (8RMI) shared his musical talents, singing “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” too many times to count! His voice echoed across the chapel, and that voice was welcomed by all.
Looking at a different angle, Liam M (8LWI) mastered the intricate skill of repairing computers, driven by a desire to learn the trade from his father, who works as a mobile technician.
“Hopefully in the future, I’ll be able to help him when he’s busy doing work.”
Digital creativity made an appearance through Ray S’s (8LWI) successfully coded game.
His stand quickly became a favourite, drawing a massive line of players – though many might have only been there for the candy he gave as a prize!
It’s always cool to learn something new, which is why a massive portion of the crowd veered over to Freddie R (8RMI) to learn about what happens to the body in space. His poster on the wall caught lots of attention!
The event couldn’t have been made possible without the staff, parents, and – obviously – the students.
Ultimately, Headway proved that when students are given freedom, they let their creativity speak for itself!
