Spotlight on the Curriculum: Physical Education

Wednesday 25th March 2026

On Sunday, March 15, nine of our Year 13 students competed in the Three Peaks Mountain Race, embracing the challenge and pushing themselves to succeed.

The Three Peaks Mountain Race is a demanding 26km trail run with approximately 1,400 metres of vertical gain covered as runners make there way around the course including climbs of Flagstaff, Swampy Summit and Mt Cargill.

Our Year 13 Physical Education class has been participating in this event since 2006, with close to 200 McGlashan boys taking on this gruelling challenge. While the race provides the basis for two achievement standards, it is ultimately about rising to a challenge and demonstrating high levels of physical and mental endurance. There are certainly easier ways to assess these standards, but the difficulty of this event adds significant value to the experience. In many ways, the race represents the culmination of the skills, fitness, and attitudes developed throughout our Physical Education programme from Years 7 to 13.

This year, the boys performed exceptionally well and gained a great deal of personal satisfaction from completing the race. It was particularly impressive to see some outstanding times recorded. William H (2 hours 40 minutes) and Noah M (2 hours 50 minutes) both achieved times that place them among the top ten McGlashan runners of the past twenty years. William also finished 3rd in the Under-20 category and 15th overall.

It was fantastic to see several Old Boys return for another attempt, and we hope some of this year’s competitors will do the same in the future—perhaps even stepping up to the 56km event. The remaining members of the Year 13 class who were unable to compete in the Three Peaks will instead take on the Dunedin Half Marathon in September.
