Look out for us at the SGCNZ Shakespeare Festival on Thursday 3rd April!

Rehearsals are now well underway for the SGCNZ Shakespeare Festival, and it's been great to see the boys diving into their roles whole-heartedly as they tackle a 15 minute teacher-directed scene from 'The Taming of the Shrew'.

For those unfamiliar, the play depicts the courtship of Petruchio and Katherina, the headstrong, obdurate shrew. Initially, Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship; however, Petruchio "tames" her, until she becomes a desirable, compliant, and obedient bride. The subplot features a competition between the suitors of Katherina's younger sister, Bianca, who is seen as the "ideal" woman.

It's a plot steeped with irony - and there are plenty of complex themes for the boys to unpack as they bring the text to life as an updated modern rendition for their peers. Keep your eyes peeled for the surprise theme!

The festival is a national event run by Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand (SGCNZ), a national organisation which focuses on mentoring and enhancing life skills through Shakespeare, and interacts and collaborates with Shakespeare’s Globe in London. Over 140,000 students have been involved in the festival and associated activities since its inception in 1991. Selected groups from the regional festivals are invited to attend the national festival in Wellington in June.

The Otago Regional Festival will take place on Thursday 3rd April 2025 at the King's and Queen's Performing Arts Centre, 270 Bay View Road Dunedin. Door sales are $10 for adults and $5 for students. We hope to see you there to support our students!
