Ōtakou/Murihiku Ngā Manu Kōrero Speech Competition

Thursday 18th June 2026

Huge congratulations are in order to the highly successful team that headed to Invercargill over the last two days to compete at the regional Ōtakou/Murihiku Ngā Manu Kōrero speech competition.

John McGlashan had 3 speakers entered this year - Noah K (Junior English), Ollie B (Junior Māori) and Kura S (Senior English).

Our speakers were joined by a further 12 boys from senior Māori, Te Ao Haka and our kapa haka who travelled down with them as kaitautoko.

It was an absolutely outstanding trip and we are thrilled to announce that Kura took first place overall in the Senior English section, earning our school a place at nationals in Kaikohe later in Term 3.

We are incredibly proud of all our speakers, months of hard work has gone into preparing for this competition, and they all presented outstanding speeches. We are also so appreciative of the students that came to tautoko and the whānau and kaiako who joined us and helped out. We also acknowledge our Columba whānau and Te Tira Haere o te Hāhi members who also competed and took the stage with us.

Poho kererū katoa mātou!
