Why is a student like a phone? Read on and find out ....

Mōrena boys,

We’ve heard much about what a growth mindset is, and the application of it to your own lives. But, I want to offer another perspective on what it can look like.

Think about your phone. When a new update comes out, you can ignore it. No side effects, no worries, right? Your phone still works, apps open, life continues regardless. But without realising it, update after update is missed, and before you know it, you can’t even update anymore, causing apps to crash, emails to be lost and storage to fail.

You're not that different.

Most of you boys have a phone or at least a device of similar calibre, which is an investment from either yourself or, more likely, your mum and dad. In the same way, there’s a huge investment being made in you right now through education at the college.

However, there's a difference. Updating your phone is easy, one click, done. Investing in yourself? Being able to knuckle down, complete your mahi? Now that takes effort. That’s showing up even though sometimes it can be seen as a tiresome chore.

If you don’t “update” yourself, give 100% every time, you will fall behind. Not all at once, but slowly. Like an old phone that’s been begging for an update for years.

This also applies to staying in your comfort zone. Don’t treat it as a time to relax, treat it as a signal to push harder, embrace the challenge and keep growing so you can push to be ahead of the curve.

The best investment you make will not be a flashy new phone, it’s in yourself.
