While everyone else was heading off on their Term 1 holiday break, a group of hardy trampers packed up and headed off on their first adventure of the year.
Lake Mackay is high in the hills behind Luggate, and this was our destination. The game was a 3, 6, or 12 hour rogaine.
Seven teams took on this challenge, from the new Year 9s undertaking the 3-hour challenge to our hearty and weathered Year 13s who head out on the 12-hour challenge.
What is a rogaine? Rogaining is the sport of long-distance cross-country navigation in which teams of two to five members visit as many checkpoints as possible in the time allotted to the event. Teams travel entirely on foot, navigating by map and compass between checkpoints in terrain that varies from open farmland to steep hilly bush-clad country-side. Teams must stick together.
Using a topographic map, teams design their own route around the course, attempting to claim as many points as possible within the entered time frame.
Competing in a rogaine is not only a great way to see parts of the country you would not usually be able to gain access to, but it also challenges map reading skills, teamwork and problem-solving.
