Junior Examinations - We need your help!

Thursday 23rd October 2025

With Junior Examinations scheduled for Week 5 of this term (3rd - 7th Nov), we are again seeking the support of our wonderful community.

Junior Exam - Reader/Writer Request
Junior Exam - Reader/Writer Request

Over the next week, we farewell our senior students as they begin study leave for their NCEA and IB examinations. For many boys, the success of this experience will be a direct result of the assistance they have and will be provided by volunteers from our community, who offered their time and support and created special assessment conditions as they have progressed toward this point.

On behalf of the students who access these supports, I would like to give our thanks. Your very generous donation of time and energy makes a significant difference to these students.

However, the preparation for the NCEA examinations does not begin in Year 11, and the Year 9 and 10 students are about to experience their own 'exam week' focus. We have a number of students in our junior classes who will receive Special Assessment Conditions when they begin their NCEA examinations in Year 11. These conditions can be access to a reader or writer, the ability to use a computer, or extra time for these assessments.

To allow these students to prepare and learn how to use these tools, we offer them these same conditions in their Junior Examinations. This is an invaluable experience for the boys, enabling them to complete their exams in the same way they will when they reach NCEA. It allows them to practice and refine their skills when working with:

  • A reader (read questions aloud without giving hints or answers)

  • A writer (record exactly what the student dictates)

  • Seperate Supervision during their assessments

We are seeking volunteers to act as readers and/or writers or in a supervisory role. If you are interested, training and further explanation can be provided. Previous volunteers have spoken enthusiastically about this experience and of how rewarding this role is.

The examinations run from Monday to Friday (Nov 3 to 7). The exams will be held in two sessions each day, each session lasting up to two hours:
Morning Session: 8:40 - 10:40 am
Mid-morning Session: 10:55 am - 12:40 pm
One afternoon Session: 1:30 - 2:30 pm (this session will only take place on Tuesday afternoon)

Each year at this time, I send out this request and am always heartened by our community's response. The students at McGlashan are so very lucky to be part of a 'village' that comes together to ensure they have the greatest opportunity for success. I am aware that not all schools have access to such support, and I thank you in advance, on the boys' behalf, for your willingness to support them.

If you are able to provide any assistance, it would be greatly appreciated if you could complete the following FORM as soon as possible.

If you know of other people in the community who may be able and willing to help, I would also greatly appreciate hearing from them.

Please feel free to make contact with me, if you have any further questions.
