On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to come together as a Year 7–8 Department for a special assembly focused on the value of respect.
Dr Columbus and Mrs Koni spoke to the boys about the importance of showing respect in all aspects of school life. Mrs Koni highlighted the significance of respecting our environment and the people around us, reminding students that small actions can make a big difference to our community.
The assembly concluded with a thoughtful address from Ted D, who reinforced the importance of respect as one of the core values of the Year 7–8 Department. Ted spoke about what respect looks and sounds like each day respecting teachers, peers, and our surroundings through positive choices, kind words, and attentive listening. He also emphasised the importance of fair play during break times, caring for our school environment, and respecting ourselves through the decisions we make on our learning journey.
Most importantly, Ted reminded us to respect the history that has shaped our college and the history we continue to create together every day. He concluded with a powerful whakataukī:
"He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata."
What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.
