A group of enthusiastic biology students recently visited the University of Otago's Physiology Department for a practical field trip. The visit provided a unique opportunity to explore key physiological processes, including thermoregulation and the electrical activity of the heart in response to exercise.

Students began by examining how the body maintains a stable internal temperature. Using specialised equipment, they observed how skin temperature, blood flow, and heart rate change in different conditions. This hands-on experience helped them understand how the body responds to exercise maintain homeostasis.

Next, the students explored the electrical signals of the heart using electrocardiograms. They performed light exercise and recorded changes in their heart rate and ECG traces. This demonstrated how the heart adapts to physical activity, with increased heart rate and stronger electrical impulses ensuring efficient blood circulation.

The visit gave students practical experience beyond the classroom, reinforcing key biological concepts.
