John McGlashan College boys continue to show their class across a range of sports

Ice Hockey

McGlashan students, Feilim Dougherty (Y8) and Aidan Dougherty (Y10), helped a New Zealand side, the Southern Knights, take second place in international ice hockey Friendship tournament held in St. Paul, Minnesota against teams from the USA, Canada, Australia, and Japan. The Southern Knights also got to attend the Minnesota Wild practice, obtain a tour of the Excel Arena (2nd picture), and attend a game of the Wild verse the New York Rangers. An article of the Kiwi team’s visit to the US “State of Hockey” can be found here, Congratulations to the Southern Knights on a phenomenal performance! Players from Dunedin, Queenstown, Tekapo, and Alexandra comprised the team.


At the Otago Junior Prize Giving two of our tennis boys performances were recognised. Bailey Godkin was awarded the 'most improved player' and Lachlan Kenneally received both the "16s Boy 'Player of the Year' and the 'Overall Boys Player of the Year' awards.

Otago/Southland Athletics

Twenty-two of our boys competed recently at the Otago/Southland Athletics held in Invercargill. Josh Hou again showed his class breaking both the 800m and 3000m records. The following boys achieved first places:

Nico Bowering - 100m and 200m

Dom Morrison - 800m

Josh Hou - 800m (Record, 4mins 30.93secs) and 3000m (9mins 59.37secs)

Leroy Ferguson - Shot Put

Nathan Harrison - High Jump

The Under-16 boys also won both the 4x100m (Dom Morrison, Johnny Baker, Hamish Brown & Nico Bowering) and 4x400m (Dominic Morrison, Nathan Harrison, Josh Hou & Johnny Baker) relays. Many of these boys went on to achieve success at the South Island Secondary School Athletic Championships (see separate article)

Primary and Intermediate Triathlon

Congratulations to the boys that qualified to compete at the Primary and Intermediate Triathlon event held in Cromwell on the 6th April. Harry Summers finished second in the Year 7 boys race despite having to refit his bike chain in the middle of the race! Akira Itadani and Nick Casey finished fourth and fifth in the same race respectively. In the Year 7 team race, Baxter Meder (Run), Harry Morshuis (Bike) and Xavier Bachop (Swim) achieved a fourth place finish.

Surf Lifesaving

National Under-14 Championships

Ollie Sinclair and Marshall Macready recently competed in the National U14 Junior Surf lifesaving competition held in Mt Maunganui. The results were:

  • Semi-final - Board Under-13
  • Semi-final - Board relay Under-14
  • Twenty-fourth in beach flags

  • Sixth - Under-12 board relay

  • Twenty-fourth in beach flags

National Surf Lifesaving Championships

Southern Regions Surf Lifesaving Championships

Nathan Wolf also competed in the Southern region championships and achieved the following results:

Otago Primary Schools

Harrison Summers won both the boys 10 year old 50 meter freestyle and breaststroke events. He was top qualifier in both events and set a new record of 32.71 seconds in the freestyle event.

South Island Zone Junior Swim championships

Harry Summers also competed in the South Island Zone Junior Championships and achieved:

  • First in the 50m and 100m Fly, 100m and 200m Free, 200m Breast and 100m and 200IM
  • Second in 50m Breast and Free
  • 3rd in 50m Back
