This is a good time of year to give our families a reminder about the College’s procedures to follow when your son is going to be absent from school.

General Absences

If you know that your son is going to be absent from school, please call the school office or email: absences@mcglashan.school.nz so we know in advance. If this is on the day, please make contact before 8:30am.

Holiday during term time

There are a number of students who are taking holidays during term time, sometimes with just a few days’ notice. All planned leave during term time must be put in writing well in advance to the Principal, John Veitch john.veitch@mcglashan.school.nz and Helen Clulee, Attendances Officer

absences@mcglashan.school.nz

Holidays during term time are an unjustified absence.

The Ministry of Education states "while holidays may provide valuable learning experiences, they can cause gaps in students' understandings that are not easily detected. In the senior years, there is emerging evidence of substantial impact on students' NCEA achievements".

Lateness

There are many students constantly arriving late. Students coming in late to classes can be very disruptive for teachers and the class. If your son has an appointment early in the morning, please notify the school office before 8.30am. There are issues with traffic which have been on-going, and so it may be necessary to leave home earlier so that your son is in class at 8.40am.

Signing out

Students need to follow the school procedure if they are feeling unwell during school time, which is to report to the office first. The office staff will then assess and contact the parents if and when required. It is not the student’s responsibility to call home.

Appointments

We understand it is not easy to get doctor, dentist, physio or hospital appointments outside of school hours. Please contact the office by 8.30am if your son has to leave for an appointment during the day so that this can be noted on the absences. If we have not been contacted then the office will

be contacting you before your son can leave school.

Thank you for your cooperation in working with the school with these procedures.
