On the 22nd of November, 11 Year 7 and 8's went down to the Caledonian for the Otago Athletic Championships.
It was a fine hot day, and after the athletics had been put off for a week due to poor weather, everyone was raring to go. The first event of the day for John McGlashan College was the 13 & Over high jump, which Peter Sewell and Jed Thompson-Fawcett were competing in. Peter cleared 1m 45cm to claim second place. Next up was the 100m sprint, where all three John McGlashan competitors, Peter Sewell, LaQuan Sem-Cheyne and Mason Prentice, made it through to the Finals. After that, Sheon placed a creditable fifth place in the Under-13 shot put. The A relay team, Peter Sewell, LaQuan Sem-Cheyne, Mason Prentice and Elias O'Kane, came second in their heat, allowing them to progress to the final. Long jump was also a minor success, with Mason Prentice coming 5th and Elias O'Kane finishing eighth.
After lunch, the finals on the track started. First was the 100m sprint. After a tough race, with one runner in the top three pulling up 10m metres before the line, John McGlashan had a clean sweep, with Mason Prentice coming third, LaQuan Sem-Cheyne second, and Peter Sewell first. A short time after that was the 4x50m relay. With some slick changes and an unfortunate injury to one of the runners in the team that beat them in the heat, The A-team managed to secure a win, becoming the fastest relay team in Otago for their age.
At the conclusion of the day was the 800m final. Peter came a solid fifth, and Grayson Westgate 11th. On the whole, it was a very successful day for John McGlashan College. We would like to thank everyone that came down to watch, the teachers who all volunteered to help, and finally, all the students that joined in.
