Term 1 comes to a close at Te Kūwaha Mātauraka

Wednesday 9th April 2025

As I write this, the Geography camp has just departed, and Southland Girls' is getting ready to arrive, bringing with them both agriculture and geography groups.

Even though the school holidays lie ahead, it’s shaping up to be a busy and vibrant time.

The weather is certainly making its mark as well – we’ve had some snow on the hills, and the temperatures are dropping, signalling that winter is on its way. It’s not all about the chill, though, as the lake has finally returned to its usual level, offering a stunning view and a reminder of the natural beauty that surrounds us.

This weekend, Environment Southland will be hosting a community planting day at Cathedral Peaks Station, an event that we at Te Kūwaha Mātauraka are proud to be part of. I will be attending on behalf of the school and running the BBQ, an opportunity for us to represent the school and contribute to a meaningful community effort. It’s a chance to connect with locals, give back to the environment, and show the broader community that we are actively involved in conservation and local initiatives.

Bookings continue to pour in from schools and groups – with some already scheduled as far out as 2026! It’s encouraging to see such long-term planning and enthusiasm for the experiences we offer, and it’s a testament to the growing reputation of Te Kūwaha Mātauraka as a hub for education, adventure, and community spirit.

I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday and I look forward to seeing some of you up here in Term 2.
