Meet John McGlashan College’s 2026 International Prefect

Sunday 15th March 2026

Tee has been with us since he was in Year 9.

Kia ora, my name is Tee and I am John McGlashan College’s 2026 International Prefect.

I have been a student here since July 2022, when I joined halfway through Year 9. Since then, I’ve experienced a great deal of personal growth. My confidence has grown, my perseverance has strengthened, and my English has improved significantly.

Studying at John McGlashan has given me many opportunities, some of which were far outside my comfort zone and things I never imagined myself doing. This includes trying new sports like ice hockey and skiing, and getting involved in extracurricular activities such as theatresports. I even took part in the hunting competition back in Year 10, which was something I never expected to do.

John McGlashan also offers a strong academic programme with great success in both NCEA and the IB Diploma Programme. The IB is only offered by 11 schools in New Zealand and just two in the South Island, which makes it a special opportunity for students here. As part of the IBDP, it has challenged me academically and helped me develop stronger critical thinking, independent learning skills, and time management. Subjects such as German and Theory of Knowledge have pushed me beyond my comfort zone and helped refine my academic discipline.

Beyond academics, one of the things I value most about John McGlashan is the sense of brotherhood among the students. The quote on the entrance of our school gym, “We Band of Brothers,” perfectly captures this spirit. During my time here, I’ve met many incredible people who have become close friends and made my experience at the college truly memorable.

For us international students, this year will be an exciting one. The international students sports day will take place at the ice skating rink; we will be skating away, and getting to know other international students from schools across Dunedin. Later this March, we will also attend the annual Mayoral Welcome at the Karitāne Marae. Invited by the Dunedin City Council, we will be welcomed onto the Marae in the traditional Māori manner—an experience that is truly unique to New Zealand.

Being part of the McGlashan whānau is a wonderful teenage experience. As the

international prefect, I want other international students to feel that same awe and excitement that I have felt here. It is my goal this year to be the voice of international students and help make their life at McGlashan happier and more meaningful.
