Rowing season is about to begin, and our Learn to Row programme is the perfect way for JMC students to discover the sport, build confidence, and join a crew with a proud tradition of success!
At assembly on Wednesday, 3 September, Mr Gomez will give the boys a run-down on rowing before introducing Fynn Allison, a recent JMC Old Boy now rowing for New Zealand. Fynn’s story shows how rowing can open doors — not only to competition at the highest level, but also to resilience, leadership, and lifelong friendships.
The Learn-to-Row programme officially begins on Saturday, 6 September at the Otago Rowing Club, led by our new coach, Mike Hill and his assisting team. Mike has spent nearly 30 years coaching at every level, from beginners to Olympic and World Championship medal-winning crews. His passion is helping every athlete, whatever their starting point, achieve their very best.
Our rowers are already proving what’s possible. Our recent medal haul at the South Island Secondary School Championships - two golds and four bronzes - is a reminder of the success that comes from commitment and support, while role models like Fynn highlight the opportunities rowing can create - from schoolboy achievement to international competition.
Rowing offers so much more than fitness. It opens doors: to friendships, personal growth, and opportunities at university and beyond. With world-class coaching, great crewmates and strong role models leading the way, there has never been a better time to get involved.
Please reach out to Tony Gomez in the sports office if you are interested or have any questions.
