Years 7 & 8 John McGlashan College vs. Waihi Exchange!

Monday 17th March 2025

A Weekend of Competitive Spirit and Camaraderie

The Summer John McGlashan College vs. Waihi Exchange took place on Sunday, 16th March, and Monday, 17th March, bringing together the two schools in a display of athleticism and sportsmanship. The two-day event featured competitions across multiple sports, fostering both rivalry and strong friendships between the players.

Day 1: Touch Rugby and Team Spirit

The tournament kicked off on Sunday afternoon with two exciting games of touch rugby. Waihi set the tone early in the first game, coming out strong and dominating from start to finish. Their well-coordinated teamwork and quick pace proved to be a challenge for John McGlashan, who fought hard but ultimately couldn't match Waihi’s intensity.

For the second match, the two teams mixed players and competed in a Barbarians-style game, blending the talents of both schools into one contest. This game was played in great spirits, as players from both teams adapted to new teammates and enjoyed the camaraderie that made this exchange so special.

Following the touch rugby matches, John McGlashan families picked up their Waihi billets, welcoming them into their homes for the evening and further strengthening the bonds between the two schools.

Day 2: A Challenge Across Multiple Sports

Monday started with a stunning fire-like sunrise, but that beauty soon gave way to rain, making for a damp beginning to the cricket match. Waihi took to the crease first and set a formidable target of 222 runs, putting the pressure squarely on JMC’s batsmen. Jack from Waihi had an outstanding game with the ball in hand, delivering a masterclass in spin bowling and taking six wickets. His performance made it incredibly difficult for John McGlashan to chase down the total, leading to a well-earned victory for Waihi.

In futsal, John McGlashan started both games strongly, securing commanding early leads. However, Waihi displayed incredible resilience and determination, coming back with a flurry of late goals in both matches. Their ability to finish strong and capitalise on key moments saw them edge out JMC in thrilling fashion.

A Memorable Exchange

Despite the mixed results on the scoreboard, the real success of the exchange was the spirit in which it was played. The competition was fierce, but the camaraderie and sportsmanship were even greater. Events like these go beyond just the wins and losses—they foster friendships, build character, and create lasting memories for all involved.

A huge thank you goes out to the families who graciously hosted billets, ensuring the visiting players felt at home. Your generosity and hospitality are what make these exchanges possible and so special. I'd also like to say thank you to the senior students who coached teams and took control of the games with their umpiring skills.

As another chapter of the John McGlashan vs. Waihi Exchange comes to a close, we look forward to the winter exchange between these two great schools, where the rivalry will undoubtedly continue in the same spirit of respect, competition, and camaraderie.
