Our Year 7/8 boys had a three-day water polo tournament with 20 teams from around the South Island.
Our Year 7/8 boys made a strong start to the tournament, finishing the opening day with a win and a draw. They settled quickly, handled the pressure well, and adjusted to the intensity of tournament play. Communication in the pool was clear, and the boys on the bench stayed engaged and supportive all the way through.
Over the three days the team picked up wins in most of their games. The final match was a tough one, which is often how tournaments go, but the boys kept fighting to the end and represented the college well.
A key highlight was an outstanding penalty save from goalkeeper Hugh. Getting up out of deep water to stop a penalty is no easy task, but he timed it perfectly and shut down the shot. It lifted the whole team. His experience as a talented football goalkeeper – competing well above his age group – was obvious in the way he read the play. A couple of quick iPhone photos from the far end of the pool managed to catch the moment and the boys’ reaction.
Right across the squad there were plenty of positives. The boys defended strongly, pressed hard, and created good attacking chances. Their effort and attitude over the whole tournament were a real credit to them.
A big thank you to Coach Cooper and Josh for their guidance, calm leadership, and smart rotation management. Their support helped the boys stay focused, enjoy the experience, and take plenty out of the tournament.
